Netflix Ships Update to Work with Any Android 3.x Tablet

Netflix closed one of the big holes in its free Android app on Wednesday by releasing a version with universal support for tablets. Any Android 3.x tablet can now get the optimized interface and stream videos without using hacks. The movie streaming had been available on Android tablets before, but only in bundles for devices like Lenovo’s IdeaPad K1 and ThinkPad Tablet.

The update also works across all of the countries in the Americas that Netflix supports. It now supports alternative audio streams and subtitles when they exist.

Support for all Android 3 tablets comes much faster than for Android 2 phones, where it was staggered out and saw Netflix take months to support most models. Netflix couldn’t move faster because of an inherent limitation in Android 2’s copy protection, where it had to be written for each processor type and sometimes by the device. Android 3 and now 4 have modular copy protection that lets a company like Netflix lock down content the same way across every device.

Regardless of the device type, Netflix needs at least Android 2.2 to work.
