Microsoft has issued the first official SmartGlass SDK to Xbox developers, according to an announcement. The software is needed to create SmartGlass Activities. Included in the SDK is the core SmartGlass Studio, as well as a JavaScript library with device APIs, and a sample app showing how code should function.

SmartGlass will allow people who own an Xbox to get extended functions through mobile devices, including ones based on Windows 8, Windows Phone, iOS, and Android. Users might, for instance, be able to see extra in-game info on their phone, or launch a movie or TV show and then “pull” it back to their tablet to keep watching. While the technology is currently aimed at the Xbox 360, it may form an integral part of Microsoft plans for a next-generation Xbox, since the current console may be nearing end-of-life.
