Microsoft Exec Thinks WP7 Will Get More than 20% Share by 2015

Predictions by analysts that Windows Phone would crest 20 percent by 2015 are not only realistic but cautious, Windows Phone marketing lead Achim Berg said in an interview late Thursday. He expected to go beyond that as a combination of new hardware partners and greater publicity garnered attention. While not giving an estimate to Bloomberg, his figure would put Windows Phone beyond the iPhone.

Among the fixes would be an attempt to fix the problem of staff deliberately putting down Windows Phone and steering customers to iPhone or Android instead. “Hundreds” of sales staff around the world would be taught how to demo the hardware. HTC would also run a major marketing push for the Radar and Titan. The company planned to go beyond the stereotypical male early adopter market and cater to first-time users and women.

Berg didn’t expect Windows Phone to accomplish its goals overnight and pointed to Apple and Google, both of whom took a few years to grow rapidly. Extra hardware partners like Acer, Fujitsu, Toshiba, and ZTE are just signing on this fall.

The statements have been made just as Microsoft is currently facing the opposite effect from its initial campaign. Windows Phone is smaller than Bada and has been largely flat. Microsoft is also infamous for making claims about how well it will succeed in mobile versus rivals. When the iPhone shipped, CEO Steve Ballmer claimed that Apple had “no chance” and envisioned Windows Mobile getting more than half of the smartphone market; Apple quickly overtook Microsoft and is now the top smartphone maker in the world, having ousted Microsoft’s new parter Nokia.
