Disney’s proposed live-action take on Pinocchio has hit a speed bump this week as Oscar winner Sam Mendes has reportedly dropped out of potentially directing the project according to The Tracking Board.

Mendes was reported to be in early talks for the director’s seat earlier this year and the new report says things hadn’t progressed past that point. The film is still in development with a screenplay by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story writer Chris Weitz who is also producing.

Several have tried to adapt Pinocchio in recent times without success. Warner Bros is still developing one with Robert Downey Jr., no new news regarding that project has come to light in recent times.

Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro was also trying to do a version of the story and has spoken about the difficulty in getting funding for his take during press rounds for The Shape of Water.
