the_uncanny_inhumans_a_pMarvel Entertainment’s publishing arm is doubling down on its Inhumans concept in preparation for the 2018 release from its movie division. April will see the launch of Uncanny Inhumans, a second comic book series spinning out of the current Inhuman title, to be created by the writer and artist responsible for last year’s Death of Wolverine miniseries.

Describing the new series as “an expansion of the storytelling related to the Inhumans in the [Marvel Universe],” writer Charles Soule told IGN that Uncanny Inhumans will “take more of a street-level approach, looking at some of the battles being fought on the ground, so to speak,” when compared with the epic narrative unfolding in the Inhuman series.

This particular version of “street-level” isn’t the usual one, however; not only will the lead of Uncanny Inhumans be former Inhumans leader Black Bolt — a man who can level cities with his voice — but the initial villain will be the Avengers’ time-traveling nemesis Kang the Conquerer. “As you might expect with Kang, you’ll get some time travel, and as the Inhumans have been present on Earth for more than twenty thousand years, I think that’s a pretty exciting prospect,” Soule teased.

The series will launch with Steve McNiven on art duties, rejoining Soule after their collaboration on 2014’s Death of Wolverine. “I think at this point that I know how to write for him,” Soule said about his collaborator. “I know where I can back off on the dialogue a bit, or just suggest that he go in one direction or another. A shorthand is coming together, and I think you’ll see that when Uncanny Inhumans starts to run.”

Uncanny Inhumans — Marvel’s third ongoing series using that adjective, joining Uncanny Avengers and Uncanny X-Men — launches in April. In addition to the Inhumans movie (due in theaters Nov. 2, 2018), mythology from the Inhumans comic books have been appearing in the ABC series Agents of SHIELD throughout its second season.
