Shutter Island

A television series based on Martin Scorsese’s 2010 feature Shutter Island (in turn based on the 2003 novel by Dennis Lehane) is heading to the small screen. Deadline reports today that HBO is teaming with Paramount Television for the project, which has the tentative title “Ashecliffe” (named for the story’s fictional hospital). Scorsese is planning on directing the pilot with Lehane and Tom Bernardo providing the screenplay.

Leonardo DiCaprio headlined the feature film version, which told the story of two U.S. marshals, Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio) and Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo), who are summoned to a remote and barren island off the coast of Massachusetts to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a murderess from the island’s fortress-like hospital for the criminally insane.

Martin Scorsese previously directed the pilot episode of “Boardwalk Empire” for HBO. He’s also attached to executive produce alongside DiCaprio, Lehane, Chris Donnelly, Brad Fischer, Laeta Kalogridis, Jennifer Davisson Killoran, Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Mike Medavoy, Arnie Messer and Rick Yorn.
