Apple Logo BlueA Wisconsin jury said Apple owes $234 million for using the university’s patented technology without permission. Apple was found to violate the patents, owned by the Wisconsin Academic Research Fund (WARF), earlier this week.

The technology helps improve the efficiency of chips and is found in Apple’s A7, A8, and A8X processors. WARF claimed Apple willfully violated the patents and sought more than $800 million.

Apple argued it should pay less than the $110 million amount Intel paid to settle a similar lawsuit in 2009. Apple plans to appeal the verdict.
