Regalia PS VitaThere’s no shortage of JRPGs these days. But despite that, Regalia – Of Men And Monarchs manages to stand out. At the moment, it’s on Kickstarter and has reached its base funding goal of $40,000. That’ll bring it to PC.

However, stretch goals have been revealed, and a PS Vita and PS4 version will be possible if $60,000 in funding can be raised. There’s still plenty of time to do that, too. When you take a look at the elements that compose the game, it’s apparent how it stand out from the rest.

It has you playing as a prince called Kay who has his dreams of a fairy tale lifestyle dashed as he discovers the realm left to him is in tatters, and his family name in a huge debt. Setting out from here, you have to guide Kay towards cleaning this grand mess up. Making matters worse is the fact that you only have two years on in-game time to do this.

Your progress as you wander the kingdom is assessed every three months. So if you’re not doing good on taking on quests, restoring buildings, and getting involved in the politics of the land’s factions then your game will end.

Another part of making progress is talking to villagers to unlock their “Social Links.” These give you skill mods, store discounts, and other benefits. You just have to hold a good conversation. There are also multi-part dungeons to explore. The game uses turn-based combat on grids with a party. And there are no healing potions or magic to help you out here.

Instead, the combat in Regalia demands that you shield your party as much as possible, especially as damage carries over between battles in the same dungeon. All of that considered, Regalia seems like it’ll be a tough and varied RPG experience. Consider backing it on Kickstarter to get it closer to that PS Vita port.
