JJ Abrams Speculates on the Fate of Person Of Interest

Person of InterestPerson of Interest” has long been at the center of cancellation conversation, as the yet-to-premiere fifth season was renewed with a truncated 13-episode order, plus has yet to receive a premiere date. Though CBS has not commented on the series’ fate, exec producer J.J. Abrams says the fifth season will probably be the last.

“My guess is it is the final season,” Abrams told reporters Saturday at the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena, Calif.

Praising the series, Abrams — who was at TCA for his upcoming Hulu series “11.22.63” — continued, “The only heartbreak there is how much good story there was to come if it were to have continued. Jonah [Nolan] and Greg Plageman have done such an amazing job on that show. I know what these episodes are that they’re done wrapping it up.”

As for when Season 5 may premiere, Abrams said, “We don’t yet have a schedule. But I know they will see the light of day…people will get to see these episodes. I know the power of that story. Again, to have a show that goes on as many years as that has, it’s very hard to complain. It’s a miracle to get a show on the air and to have it last that long is something that we should just be grateful for. But I do love that show and I would’ve loved to see that continue.”

Abrams’ comments come after much speculation that the series would end after its upcoming season, following the episode order.

This past summer at Comic-Con, Nolan also touched on the possibility that the series would be ending after Season 5. “We’re very, very proud of the show and very excited with the show we’ve been making,” the creator said. “If it’s the last season, no one is going to be disappointed with the story that we tell.”
