During Obama’s tour of Intel’s research and manufacturing facilities in Portland, Intel CEO Paul Otellini announced plans to construct a new factory in Arizona, a move that is expected to cost the company over $5 billion in investment. The expansion strategy will be part of a larger plan that also involves adding 4,000 new employees this year.

The new plant will serve to bolster Intel’s chip production capacity on US soil, complementing existing facilities in Chandler, Arizona. The company claims the facility, named Fab 42, will focus on 14-nanometer chips and upcoming technology, which will also be handled at the Fab D1X plant that will be constructed in Oregon.

Construction of the Fab 42 plant will begin soon, with operations expected to begin sometime in 2013
