iCloud users are now getting email notifications whenever an Apple ID signs into iCloud.com for the first time from a new device. Each message includes a date and time stamp, and is meant to warn someone in case the login is actually by a hacker. The update is part of a series of planned security upgrades announced by Apple CEO Tim Cook.
Following a celebrity photo leak scandal — in which many of the photos were stolen from iCloud accounts — Cook has promised a number of changes, such as notifications for many iCloud events, and more promotion of its two-factor authentication system. The latter sends a code to a separate device whenever a user tries to make modifications to an Apple account. With iOS 8, due later this month, both iOS devices and Macs will be covered by the process.
