HBO’s Veep is about to take a bow, with the network announcing Wednesday that the heralded comedy will come to a close after its upcoming seventh season. Julia Louis-Dreyfus has starred as hapless politician Selina Meyer since the series debuted in April 2012.

“The decision to bring ‘Veep’ to a close at the end of next season is bittersweet,” said HBO programming president Casey Bloys. “We love the show and everyone involved but respect the producers’ choice to bring Selina Meyer’s journey to its conclusion after an extraordinary run of critical and award-winning acclaim.”

“Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ comedic brilliance infused Selina with a dynamic presence and a vibrant wit which will ensure her a place in the history of television’s most iconic comedic characters,” Bloys continued. “We look forward to producing the seventh and final season.”

Louis-Dreyfus took to Twitter on Wednesday to weigh in on the sad news. “It’s true BUT don’t despair cuz we still have a whole season 7 to write and film,” she wrote.

The political comedy series was created by Armando Iannucci and is adapted from his British sitcom “The Thick of It.”

“Veep,” which will launch its final season next year, aired its Season 6 finale in June. The following month, it picked up 12 Emmy nominations, including outstanding comedy series, a category in which it has prevailed for the past two years.
