HBO Has Started Movie Discussions for Deadwood

Almost exactly nine years ago, HBO’s cult western series “Deadwood” breathed its last breath of airtime after the cable network cancelled it after a mere three 12-episode seasons, but this is the age of TV revivals and both Entertainment Weekly and actor Garret Dillahunt have confirmed that a return trip to 1870s South Dakota is in the cards.

Dillahunt, who played geologist Francis Wolcott on the show, fired the first shots on Twitter:

Then EW talked to an HBO spokeswoman who indeed confirmed that “preliminary talks” were taking place between the cast and creator David Milch to do a TV movie to hopefully wrap up all the loose ends. This corresponds with Milch’s original plan to make two movies and create a proper ending for the rivalry between Sheriff Seth Bullock (Timothy Olyphant) and foul-mouthed pimp Al Swearengen (Ian McShane).

As it happens, McShane just signed on for the sixth season of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” which puts him comfortably back under the umbrella of the network, while Olyphant ended a five-year run on FX’s “Justified” in April.

Other cast members who may return include Molly Parker, Jim Beaver, W. Earl Brown, Dayton Callie, Kim Dickens, Dora DuFran, Brad Dourif, Anna Gunn, John Hawkes and Jeffrey Jones.
