The Book of Life director Jorge R. Gutierrez has reportedly revealed in a Facebook post that he’s departed the upcoming LEGO movie spin-off feature The Billion Brick Race with the project now seemingly in limbo with no replacement at present.
Flickering Myth discovered the post about his exit which follows on from last year’s The LEGO Batman Movie and The LEGO Ninjago Movie with the latter coming in well under expectations. The exit could suggest Warner Bros. Pictures might be slowing down a bit on their plans for a vast LEGO cinematic universe.
Here’s the post:
“I would like to publicly and from the bottom of my heart thank everyone I worked with at Briksburg, LEGO and WAG. These last nine months were a rollercoaster of thrills to say the least. I met so many amazing new people and learned a ton from all these incredible artists, directors, writers, editors, producers and execs. I leave a better filmmaker and it’s because of you all. May our paths cross again. Gracias mis amigos. And as I toasted on my first day there, ‘May we slip n slide on the blood of our enemies!!!’”
Jason Segel (The Muppets) and Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3) were previously attached to write and direct before Gutierrez came onboard. At present The LEGO Movie 2 is the only LEGO film on Warners’ schedule and that is set to open early next year.
