Following an announcement last week, Rockstar Games has made the 10 Year Anniversary Edition of Grand Theft Auto 3 available for iOS and selected Android devices. Because of the complexity of the graphics, the game is limited to the iPad, iPhone 4 and later and 4th-generation iPod Touch for iOS, and a limited range of Android phones and tablets. The app sells for $5.

Supported Android phones include the HTC Rezound, LG Optimus 2x, Motorola Atrix 4G, Motorola Droid X2, Motorola Photon 4G, Samsung Galaxy R, and T-Mobile G2x. It is also compatible with some Android tablets, such as the Acer Iconia, ASUS Eee Pad Transformer, Dell Streak 7, LG Optimus Pad, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1, Sony Tablet S, and Toshiba Thrive.

The game, originally released in 2001, uses a number of on-screen buttons to recreate the controls of the console and desktop versions. Like the original, the game is an “open-world” quest, allowing players to go anywhere and spend as much time as they like on non-critical activities. Graphics have been improved for HD resolutions, and gameplay has been optimized for touch devices.

Buyers must be at least 17 years old to purchase the app on the App Store (the Android Store has no restrictions but carries a “High Maturity” content rating). It requires iOS 4.3 or later or Android 2.1 or later.
