Google today launched a mobile version of Google Voice for Android and BlackBerry phones. The app makes outbound calling on the unified phone services easier and sends both calls and SMS messages directly through the Google Voice number. This way it will honor the settings in your Google Voice account on which phones to ring, etc.
Dialing is integrated with the existing phone contact list now. The automated transcripts feature of Google Voice is made better use of with the app. Voice messages pulled in are both available in transcript form but also played back with accompanying voice in a karaoke-like manner that highlights words as they’re spoken.
In addition to the two current smartphone platforms, Google also says a version is in development for the iPhone but until then iPhone owners with Google Voice account can still use the web version. Google didn’t indicate when Google Voice might be available for Windows Mobile devices or Palm’s WebOS.
Google’s app is free for either mobile operating system, though it requires one of the currently closed beta Google Voice accounts.
