Google Home Gains Voice-Based Shopping

Google has added the ability to shop for certain goods to its voice-controlled Google Home speaker. Google says people can use Google Home to purchase everyday essentials from more than 50 national and local retailers.

Some of the initial stores include Costco, Whole Foods Market, Walgreens, PetSmart, and Bed Bath & Beyond. Google Home owners need only say “Ok Google, how do I shop?” or “Ok Google, order paper towels” to get started.

The Google Home app on the Google Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones allows Home owners to configure their default credit card, shipping address, and other settings before making their first purchase.

Google says now through April 30, people who shop via Google Home won’t be dinged with service or membership fees associated with its retail partners. Google expects to enable purchases from more apps and services over time.
