Rumored for more than two decades, Ghostbusters 3 appears to finally be moving forward, sadly without leading man Bill Murray. The current schedule calls for Ivan Reitman to return as director with a summer 2013 production start being targeted.

Dan Aykroyd previously confirmed reports that the plot will revolve around a new generation of Ghostbusters and hinted at the states of his and Harold Ramis’ characters.

“My character, Ray, is now blind in one eye and can’t drive the cadillac,” he said, “He’s got a bad knee and can’t carry the packs… Egon is too large to get into the harness. We need young blood and that’s the promise. We’re gonna hand it to a new generation.”

Etan Cohen was recently brought in to rewrite the script, working from a draft by Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg.

Assuming Ghostbusters 3 hits its production mark, it’s likely that the sequel will be released in 2014, tying into the original film’s 30th anniversary.
