FTC LogoThe U.S Federal Trade Commission today approved Microsoft’s proposed $7.2 billion purchase of Nokia’s handset business.

Microsoft first announced the plan in early September. With the U.S. government on board, Microsoft is one step closer to absorbing Nokia’s phone-making capabilities. Nokia’s shareholders have already approved the deal. Nokia switched to Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform in 2011 and has since become the world’s foremost supplier of Windows Phone handsets.

Nokia will continue to run its networking business and will retain rights to the Nokia brand.
