Freeform Drops Its Option on Marvel Comedy New Warriors

New Warriors, the live-action comedy series centered on the Marvel comics heroes will not air on Freeform as originally planned. The series, which had been set for a 2018 debut, is currently getting shopped to other networks and platforms. According to other reports, the project will also not move to Disney’s in-the-works streaming service as has been reported by other media outlets.

The show landed a straight-to-series order from Freeform earlier this year, and the cast includes Derek Theler (“Baby Daddy”) as Mister Immortal and Milana Vayntrub (“This Is Us”) as Squirrel Girl. Freeform announced last month that it is expanding to a fourth night of original programming in 2018. It recently handed a two-season pickup to “The Bold Type” despite a change in showrunner, and has said goodbye this year to “Pretty Little Liars,” “Baby Daddy,” “Switched at Birth” and “Stitchers.”

New Warriors isn’t the first Marvel TV project to experience a bumpy road this year. The new ABC drama Marvel’s Inhumans has been lambasted by critics and fans in its first season, and the show was labeled a “work in progress” by ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey in August.
