Motorola and Verizon are reportedly set to begin LTE upgrades for the Xoom tablet, however the initial rollout is said to be limited to business and government accounts. Unnamed sources have told Droid-Life the companies will be providing LTE upgrades to the pilot groups over the next two weeks, ahead of availability for the general public.
The Xoom was originally touted as the first tablet to offer LTE capabilities and Android 3.2, however owners have been forced to wait for the 4G upgrade. The device first arrived on the market in January, placing at least seven months between the launch and promised capabilities.
The delays are believed to be related to problems with the LTE chipset. The upgrade will require owners to send the tablet to Motorola be outfitted with the LTE hardware and shipped back within days.
The public LTE upgrades are expected to arrive sometime in September. Motorola has yet to commit to a specific time-frame, however.
