A first official look has been released of Mr. Robot star Rami Malek as Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in Bryan Singer’s upcoming biopic Bohemian Rhapsody at 20th Century Fox, GK Films and New Regency.

EW premiered the photo from the film which chronicles the formation of Queen in the 1970s through to the band’s iconic performance at Live Aid in 1985, six years before the singer died of complications from AIDS.

Parts of the movie that features singing will utilize either Malek’s own voice or recordings of Mercury, with a sound alike filling in the gaps. Malek tells the outlet:

“We’re going to use Freddie as much as possible and use myself as much as possible. I’m in Abbey Road [Studios] right now if that should say anything to you. I’m not working on my acting.”

Singer says his approach is to honor the music, but it won’t shy away from some of the darker aspects of Mercury’s life. Anthony McCarten (The Theory of Everything) penned the most recent draft of the film which opens Christmas Day 2018
