The wait for the popular multimedia player VLC is finally over for most Android users for free. VideoLAN stresses that the app is not yet stable and is only intended for power users and hackers, at this time. It is compatible with most Android devices, provided that they support the NEON engine for ARMv7 processors.
The open source cross-platform multimedia player has grown in popularity over the years for its ability to play a wide range of file types, especially for its ability to play files not always natively supported in many devices. Popular supported codecs include MPEG-2, DivX, H.264, MKV, WebM, WMV, MP3 and FLAC.
Early reviews are very positive with users noting its multitasking capabilities, although some are also reporting the expected early bugs. VLC is also available as a download for iOS, Mac OS X, Linux, Windows and Unix from the VideoLAN website.
