Has Sony Pictures found their The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo sequel director? Variety is reporting that the studio is keen on signing Don’t Breathe and Evil Dead remake director Fede Alvarez to helm the project. Confirmation of plans for the Dragon Tattoo sequel arrived almost exactly one year ago with the announcement that the new film would skip both Stieg Larsson follow-up novels (The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest) and instead adapt author David Lagercrantz’s follow-up novel, The Girl in the Spider’s Web.

The Girl in the Spider’s Web was published in 2015 and continues Larsson’s trilogy. Published in the United States by Alfred A. Knopf, the book is officially described as follows:

Late one night, Blomkvist receives a phone call from a source claiming to have information vital to the United States. The source has been in contact with a young female superhacker—a hacker resembling someone Blomkvist knows all too well. The implications are staggering. Blomkvist, in desperate need of a scoop for Millennium, turns to Salander for help. She, as usual, has her own agenda. The secret they are both chasing is at the center of a tangled web of spies, cybercriminals, and governments around the world, and someone is prepared to kill to protect it…

Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig, who starred in the 2011 David Fincher film, will not return for the The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo sequel.
