The FCC today said it is considering new rules for the Educational Broadband Service (EBS) spectrum in the 2.5 GHz band.

The FCC says much of this spectrum is unused across the U.S., particularly in rural areas. A Notice of Proposed Rulemakeing (PDF) seeks comment on how bests to move forward with this spectrum, particularly with respect to licensing and how it might be used for commercial purposes.

“The idea [is] to allow more efficient and effective use of this spectrum band and to provide new opportunities for EBS eligible entities, rural Tribal Nations, and commercial entities to obtain unused 2.5 GHz spectrum to facilitate improved access to next generation wireless broadband, including 5G,” said the FCC.

The agency did not set a timeline for making any decisions.
