Dropcam Giving Free Replacements for Older Cameras

Owners of older Dropcam camera will be able to upgrade to a newer version at no charge, due to an impending lack of support from the company. The Nest-owned manufacturer will be providing a Dropcam HD as a replacement for earlier models, as the company will be dropping support for original Dropcam and the Dropcam Echo from April 15.

A support page for the “Dropcam Legacy Camera Replacement Program,” spotted by Droid-Life, notes “As we improve Dropcam, we’ll no longer be able to give Original Dropcam and Dropcam Echo owners an experience that meets our standards. So we decided to stop supporting these products and offer owners a free replacement Dropcam HD camera.”

Affected owners will have to fill out an emailed replacement form to get the camera, delivered within three weeks, and will not be required to send the old camera back. Existing accounts can be transferred to work with the new camera, and customers with cloud video recording subscriptions will see monthly payments end from February 1 with refunds provided to yearly subscribers, though it will continue to work until April 15.

Notably, the replacement camera will be the Dropcam HD, a $150 model the company recently stopped selling on its website, rather than the still-available Dropcam Pro.
