dragon-quest-wii-u-screenshot-5“Dragon Quest XI” is set for release no later than May 2017, Square Enix has announced. The latest and 11th installment in the long-running role-playing video game series will be an offline game, the publisher said.

It is a departure from the previous installment, “DQ X,” which is mainly played online and was released in 2012. “DQ XI” will be played offline with a home console and video game software like the other predecessors, the company said.

Screenshots from the new game currently under development were unveiled at a news conference in Tokyo. Square Enix did not go into details about the gameplay.

“DQ XI” is being developed for Nintendo Co.’s 3DS handheld console and Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.’s PlayStation 4 home console. Image quality and other specifications will vary, but characterization and storyline will be the same for both editions. The publisher is also considering the release of the new title for Nintendo’s next-generation home console under development, NX, it added.

“We want people to play it,” “DQ” series creator and video game designer Yuji Horii said. “We are making the most of the characteristics of each gaming machine.”
