Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound Coming to Netflix

Posted by at 12:44 pm on February 12, 2010

Netflix’s watch instantly service started back at LG’s press conference before the start of CES 2008 (watch the video below) and now it is everywhere.     Now the service has lack two major pieces that home theater buffs want; 1080P and Dolby 5.1 surround sound.

Since it does not look like 1080P is in the cards for 2010, Vudu still has a leg up on Netflix with more choices available in HD and higher-quality with its HDX (1080P) offerings.   Netflix uses Microsoft’s Silverlight platform, which has 1080p capability.   So it is really a question of when, not one can they do it.

Netflix has not given a timetable yet of when they will be going to Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound.

So for now, paying the extra fee for Blu-ray rentals is the only sure way to get a 1080P picture form Netflix

Interview with Steve Swasey, Netflix’s VP of Communications at CES 2008

  1. Netflix is a great stock to own as an investor, they’re a savvy company that leads the way in streaming, makes cash hand over fist, and is one of the most powerful consumer brands in the U.S.

My target is $80 in about a year.
