DC Comics to Relaunch Justice League Early This Summer

DC Comics is reporting that the new Justice League title will launch this June, with “a cosmos-shaking mystery.” Justice League #1 will be written by Scott Snyder (Dark Nights: Metal), with art by Jim Cheung (Marvel’s Young Avengers) and Jorge Jimenez (Superman). The new book will follow the events of DC Nation #0 (coming out on May 2nd), and will launch the League into a mystery that “will draw out their most terrible foes.”

The debut issue will see Martian Manhunter struggling to protect the team from “an incoming threat that will shatter the world as they know it, while a familiar face strikes out on a dark path.” The book is set to release bi-weekly, with Justice League #2 set to present the team with an “impossible decision.”

Cheung is happy to be back at DC, and stated that he couldn’t think of “a more perfect book to return” with. Jimenez seems equally thrilled, stating that, “I have in my hands a script written by the incredible Scott Snyder starring most important DC characters — Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman!” Snyder is just as happy as his partners, stating that “Justice League has been the golden ring for me since I came to DC.” He also mentions that the new book’s story is something that he’s been building to throughout Dark Nights: Metal.

Though we don’t know for certain what characters the team will include, the above cover art by Cheung and the following cover art from Jimenez seem to indicate who they will be:

In what looks like a slight mash-up of the classic Justice League animated series and the recent film, the team looks like it will feature Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, The Flash, Jon Stewart (Green Lantern), Cyborg, Martian Manhunter, Aquaman, and Hawkgirl. Justice League was sorely missing Jon Stewart, Hawkgirl, and Manhunter…while Cyborg was never really at the forefront of the animated show. It also looks like the comics will avoid the Jason Momoa “bro-down” version of Aquaman.

Justice League #1 will hit the shelves on June 6, and it will be followed by Justice League #2 on June 20. Will you be buying them? Because of its connection to Dark Nights: Metal, are you hoping for an appearance by Dream of the Endless? Will Cyborg have a storyline that you actually care about?
