Canadian Comic Collector Sells Half of Collection for Typhoon Relief

Morgan WolmanMontreal comic collector Morgan Wolman has decided to put up half of his collection for sale, coming out to roughly 1,000 books, with all proceeds going to benefit victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. The typhoon killed over 5,000 people in that country when it hit at the beginning of November.

“I’ve been collecting for about 16 years, and at a certain point you just sort of end up sitting on them,” he explained. “They’re there and there’s absolutely no use. The idea behind this is giving them to people who will enjoy them more than I will. Most of them are ones I really enjoyed and that I thought would go easier, in order to raise money for this cause.” he told the Montreal Gazette.

It’s not the first time that Wolman has parted with some of his titles for a good cause. Last year, he held a similar sale to raise money for the Children’s Hospital. While Wolverine has the X-Men and Iron Man has The Avengers, Wolman has Ray Silas, the owner of Librarie Crossover Comics, who has been offering resources to help the cause.

“Ray is a good friend of mine, I used to work with him at a different comic shop,” he said. “He’s been kind enough to offer some comics as well and I think we’re making that a home base for pickups.”

Instead of picking one charity, Wolman decided to let the buyers decide where they’d like to see the money go, though he’s recommended the Red Cross, World Vision and Doctors Without Borders. After a buyer has committed to a comic, they must provide proof of the donation through a receipt before Wolman will hand it over.

“Comics are what are personal to me,” he explained. “But I’m looking for alternatives that are accessible to everyone.”
