Buffalo has announced two new external hard drive models. The MiniStation Extreme and the DriveStation Axis Velocity are its latest drives to support the high-bandwidth USB 3.0 standard. The MiniStation Extreme is a portable hard drive model, while the DriveStation Axis Velocity line is a desktop hard drive solution.

The MiniStation Extreme gets its name because of its more rugged design, which is designed to withstand knocks and bumps when used on the move. To this end, it incorporates a rubberized base and shock protection elements that meet Military standards for shock protection. It also incorporates 256-bit AES hardware encryption helping it meet stringent US government standards for security.

The DriveStation Axis Velocity is a traditional desktop external hard drive. It utilizes a high-speed 7,200 RPM hard drive for fast data access. It also comes with the same level of data security, at 256-bit, as the MiniStation Extreme.

Both drives are capable of achieving the USB 3.0 standard’s peak data throughput of up to 5Gb/s and are Mac and PC compatible.

The MiniStation ships in 500GB and 1TB capacities for $95 and $130 respectively, while the Axis Velocity starts at $95 for the 1TB model and goes up to $135 for 2TB and $180 for a range topping 3TB.
