Canonical today said consumers interested in its Ubuntu smartphone operating system will finally be able to buy a handset with Ubuntu on board.

The Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition will be sold across Europe by BQ in a series of flash sales over the coming weeks.

The device will be sold unlocked, but a handful of European network operators will bundle a SIM card in with the device. It supports HSPA+ but not LTE 4G. The phone has a 4.5-inch qHD screen and includes a MediaTek quad-core Cortex A7 processor running at 1.3 GHz with 1GB RAM. It features an 8-megapixel main camera and a 5-megapixel user-facing camera. The main camera includes dual-LED flashes and back-side illumination, and supports 1080p HD video capture.

The Ubuntu operating system, which Canonical has been working on for years, is based on Linux. It reimagines the user interface and makes use of swiping gestures from the sides of the display to call up apps and other elements.

The Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition will cost about $195, but it is not being made available to U.S. buyers at this time.
