ios-9-logoApple has provided an avenue to help people with bricked iPhones restore their device to working order.

The issue pertains to devices that were repaired by third-party shops with non-Apple parts. Some of these phones are failing a security test when being updated to new versions of iOS, prompting the phones to lock up and show Error 53 in iTunes.

“This test was designed to check whether Touch ID works properly before the device leaves the factory,” said Apple in a statement provided to TechCrunch.

The company released a software update that allows customers whose iPhones generate Error 53 to restore their device using iTunes. Apple will, however, leave Touch ID disabled on iPhones that can’t pass the security test.

Apple apologized for the inconvenience.
