Apple LogoApple confirmed that it has acquired a small, high-precision navigation company called Coherent Navigation.

“Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time,” said the company in a statement, “and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.”

Apple did not say when it bought Coherent, and neither did it say how much it paid for the company.

TechCrunch points out, however, that Coherent CEO Paul Lego’s LinkedIn page suggests he’s been working for Apple for about 5 months, placing the acquisition back around the beginning of the year.

Apple has scooped up a number of small mapping and navigation companies over the last several years in an effort to increase the accuracy and ability of its Apple Maps application.
