Andy Hummel, who played bass guitar in the power-pop band Big Star, has died of cancer at age 59. Hammel has a two-year battle with disease. A representative for Rhino Records, which recently released a box set of Big Star’s work.
Hummel, along with Chilton, guitarist Chris Bell and drummer Jody Stephens (the band’s only surviving member) formed the power-pop group in 1971.
“In the Street,” from their 1972 album “#1 Record,” served as the theme song of “That ’70s Show” (after being re-recorded by fellow rock band Cheap Trick).
