Amazon Faces ‘No Gay? No Way! Campaign Over Its Second Headquarters Finalists

A group of LGBT advocates launched the “No Gay? No Way!” campaign, spotlighting the eleven anti-LGBT locations in nine different states on Amazon’s recent list of finalists for its new headquarters AKA HQ2.

The campaign asks Amazon to select a market where all employees and customers will be protected from discrimination, and is planning a series of online and local activities to raise awareness.

The group had a plane flying over Amazon HQ in Seattle with banner reading “No Gay? No Way!” (TOT was unable to the flight at the time of posting.)

The group has planned events in Seattle and a targeted digital advertising campaign to coincide with today’s Amazon earnings call.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos donated generously to Washington state’s Referendum 74 in 2012 and joined a coalition of companies in support of the Equality Act shortly after. The company co-authored a letter with fourteen other corporate leaders demanding that the Texas Legislature reject any bill that discriminates against transgender people.

“Amazon cannot turn its back on the LGBT community. The company has a fundamental responsibility to build its new headquarters in a compatible cultural and community environment,” added Gaughan. “Employees should never have to ask Alexa, ‘will I be fired from my new job for simply being myself?’ The answer should always be ‘no.’”

Today’s action is just the first of sustained campaign the group plans to do to encourage Amazon to choose a location that provides protections for LGBT people.
