Xoom 4G Upgrade Push Out to September

Motorola’s long-delayed 4G upgrade for the Xoom may not ship until the very end of the summer. Tips on Tuesday had Motorola and Verizon letting owners know about the upgrade but tell them that it wouldn’t be available until September. The Droid-Life source had yet to get details like turnaround times.

The upgrade when it arrives will be free and will involve shipping the Xoom to Motorola for a few days while the company drops in the mini PCI module for LTE speeds.

LTE for the Xoom has been one of the longest-delayed of multiple promised features that weren’t available for the Android 3 tablet when it shipped. Motorola promised a 4G upgrade when the Xoom was first shown in January but, if the leak is correct, won’t have had it in a real, shipping product until eight months later. Motorola had originally pegged the release in spring, but LTE chipset troubles pushed it back.

The Xoom still lacks full microSD card slot support.
