WPC Adds Resonant Charging to Qi Spec

The Wireless Power Consortium announced that it has bolstered its Qi wireless charging specification with resonant charging. Resonant charging offers several benefits, the most important of which is the ability to charge over longer distances and deliver more finely-tuned power.

The updated spec will allow charging with higher efficiency and lower radio frequency interference, and allow more devices to charge on a single pad. Despite the new features, the standard is still backward compatible with the entire installed base of Qi products and devices.

The updated Qi spec should allow accessory makers to be more creative in their designs, which will result in better wireless charging products for consumers.
