Microsoft today announced expanded hardware support for Windows Phone 8, AKA Apollo. The new hardware features of the platform include support for multi-core processors, such as dual- and quad-core chips.
Windows Phone 8 will support expandable memory via microSD cards. The other significant hardware change will support for multiple screen resolutions, including 800 x 480, 1280 x 768, and 1280 x 720p HD. This will allow manufacturers to explore different form factors and designs.
To-date, Windows Phone has always required a 480 x 800 display. The platform now also includes support for near-filed communications.
Sadly devices currently running on Windows Phone 7.5 will not be on the receiving end of the long-awaited update.
