brainageWithout warning or publicity, the publisher released the DS version of Brain Age on the Japanese Wii U eShop last night. Gamers are able to download it free of charge until June 30, at which point it will no longer be available. It has yet to be confirmed whether the game will also be available soon in North America or Europe: at the time of writing the deal is only available to Japanese Wii U owners.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata announced in January that the company planned to revive titles from the original DS software catalogue via Virtual Console releases for Wii U. Iwata said during an investor meeting that the firm had overcome technical hurdles to enable it to bring DS Virtual Console titles to the big screen with Wii U.

Brain Age (known as Brain Training in Europe) was one Nintendo’s most successful titles on any platform, and was one of the main factors in bringing the DS to a wider audience. The game sold a total of 19 million copies worldwide.
