Verizon Removing Its App Store from All Phones in January

Verizon Wireless today indicated via its developer blog that it will shutter the Verizon Wireless App Store come January 2013. Verizon launched its branded app store in March 2010 as an alternative to other established app stores.

According to Verizon, it will notify owners of Android and BlackBerry smartphones this month about the forthcoming closure of the app store. Almost immediately, Verizon’s app store will cease offering apps that require monthly subscriptions or other regular license checks.

This includes in-app content, as well. Verizon will automatically end all monthly subscriptions in December, and begin removing the Verizon App Store from devices entirely beginning in January. It expects the process to be complete by March 2013.

Verizon believes that Android and BlackBerry smartphones are well served by alternative app stores, such as Google Play, Amazon App Store, and BlackBerry App World.
