Unreal Engine 3 Runs In Flash Player 11 At 60 FPS

Epic Games has announced that the latest iteration of the Unreal Engine 3 can run within Adobe Flash Player 11, and the games are output at a lightning fast 60 frames per second.

Emmy Huang, group product manager, Adobe Gaming Solutions commented in the press release about the achievement, saying…

“We’re excited that Epic Games is tapping into the latest capabilities in Adobe Flash Player 11 to power its Unreal Engine 3,” “As the console of the web, Flash is delivering immersive gaming experiences across screens and we’re thrilled to have Epic Games using Flash Player to deliver its blockbuster, premier 3D games on the Web.”

What does this mean exactly? It means that we could be seeing (and playing) the next generation of video games right from the comfort of our web browsers. Amazing, eh? Well, it gets better: Flash Player 11 has accelerated graphics and streaming pipelined content and resource management for pumping out some really high quality content, meaning that the Unreal Engine probably won’t be the only triple-A game engine capable of running console-quality (and potentially next-gen quality) games from within a browser.

What’s more is that anyone who has a license for the Unreal Engine 3 can make full use of all the assets and tools associated with browser-based gaming. I can’t wait to see what some developers out there do now that they can make high quality games without gamers needing high-end system requirements.
