Tyrese Gibson, the musician and actor set to make his fourth big screen The Fast and the Furious franchise appearance in this summer’s Furious 7 has, according to a story at Deadline, today signed on to lead the Universal Pictures actioner Desert Eagle. Gibson himself wrote the original spec script alongside Mike Le.

Desert Eagle will star Gibson as a border patrol agent who, alongside his partner, seeks to take down a deadly drug cartel that has itself up within a casino on a Native American reservation.

“As far as roles, I want to do a real character piece,” Gibson told ComingSoon.net a few years ago. “I want to do a role where I get to play someone. That way I get to remove all my own instincts and habits and just completely submerge myself in the role… I’m really looking to try and step up and make people realize that I do have a little more in me than they probably would have guessed.”

Le is best known for scripting the upcoming Patient Zero, currently in the works at Screen Greems with Matt Smith (“Doctor Who”) and Natalie Dormer (“Game of Thrones”) both attached to headline. Newcomers Josh Campbell and Matthew Stuecken have been brought into rewrite Gibson and Le’s original draft.

Gibson is also attached to executive produce Desert Eagle through his Voltron Filmz. Scott Stuber will, meanwhile, produce through his own Bluegrass Films.
