Lionsgate opened the finale to the Suzanne Collins’ adaptation The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 across the country for Thursday night previews last night where it grossed $16 million, which is lower than the $17 million earned on Thursday by last year’s The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, which went on to an opening day of $55 million and weekend opening of $121.9 million.

Starring the returning cast of Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Julianne Moore, Elizabeth Banks, Donald Sutherland and more, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 opens officially today in 4,175 theaters, 24 more theaters than “Part 1,” with slightly better reviews on Rotten Tomatoes than the previous installment.

Obviously, the previous “Hunger Games” films are a good barometer for how well the finale might do opening weekend, especially since it’s down significantly from 2013’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which scored $25 million on Thursday, made $158 million opening weekend, $424.6 million domestic total and $865 million worldwide.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 is already doing well internationally, and we’ll have more updates on how it fares tomorrow once Friday estimates come in and on Sunday with the weekend estimates for both domestic and worldwide.
