Walt Disney Pictures reported today that Marvel’s The Avengers has climbed to the 9th spot on the all-time worldwide box office list, surpassing the studio’s own Alice in Wonderland ($1,024.3 million) and Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace ($1,027.0 million). The film has grossed $1,036.2 million worldwide.
“The Avengers” also became the highest domestic grossing film of 2012 passing The Hunger Games in just 12 days of release and is the 13th highest grossing domestic release of all-time.
On Tuesday, the Joss Whedon action adventure added $11.7 million internationally and $8.5 million domestically for a total of $20.2 million. The international gross to date is $646.8 million and domestic gross has reached $389.5 million.
The movie should easily pass up the next three films on the all-time global list which are all three Disney films – Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides ($1,043.9 million), Toy Story 3 ($1,063.2 million) and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest ($1,066.2 million).
