Texas Instruments to Decrease Smartphone CPU Biz – Targeting Wider Ranger of Devices

Posted by at 10:31 am on September 26, 2012

Texas Instruments has revealed plans to shift the focus of its mobile processor business away from devices such as smartphones and tablets. Instead, the company will look to target a wider range of industrial customers, such as carmakers, in the hopes that the move will stabilize its business. Texas Instruments has lost ground to Qualcomm, Apple, and Samsung in the smartphone processor space in recent years.

Though it will continue to make and market chips for mobile devices, it will reduce the amount of capital it funnels to those businesses. “We believe that opportunity is less attractive as we go forward,” said senior VP for TI’s embedded processing unit, Greg Delagi, at an investor meeting. Delagi believes the embedded processor market represents a better business opportunity for TI in the long run.
