Chinese manufacturer TCL is attempting to take the lead in Ultra HD televisions, by preparing a budget 50-inch television for sale in September. The 4K-capable television revealed by the company is flanked by other HDTVs it will be launching in the United States next month, including 40-inch, 46-inch, and 55-inch models.
The 50-inch UHDTV has a 120Hz edge-lit LED panel that can display images at 3840×2160 and has a 5 million:1 dynamic contrast ratio, writes Engadget. Able to upscale HD content to the 4K resolution, it can take video from its four HDMI inputs, as well as from a smartphone or tablet over MHL.
The supporting 5510-series HDTVs also have 120Hz LED panels, with the smaller 40-inch and 46-inch models having three HDMI inputs, MHL, and a 3,500,00:1 dynamic contrast ratio. The 55-inch version opts for four HDMI inputs and a 5 million:a contrast ratio, have smart TV features and Wi-Fi connectivity, and is said to exceed Energy Star 6.0 guidelines.
Arriving in August, the 40-inch, 46-inch, and 55-inch HDTVs will cost $399, $499, and $799 respectively. The 50-inch Ultra HD television will arrive in September for $999, making it the second sub-$1000 UHDTV that will go on sale in the US, after Seiki announced its own 39-inch set for $699 in June.
