Nintendo has announced Wii classic Super Mario Galaxy will be released digitally on Wii U through the eShop later this week, on 4 February. The game’s release is the latest in a long line of classic Nintendo games being made available on the console.

The news was announced in a tweet sent on 1 February. A press release issued at the same time confirms the game will cost £17.99/€19.99. Players who owned it on Wii can already play it on their Wii U due to the system’s backwards compatibility.

No information has been released regarding changes to the original game. If there are any, they will likely be minimal.

Super Mario Galaxy is widely heralded as one of the greatest games ever made, and one of the greats to bear the Mario name – alongside Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario World. The game is unique in the pantheon of Mario platformers due its planetary system and gravitational mechanic –which shakes up the usual run and jump gameplay.

It was originally released in 2007 and was followed by a sequel, which reintroduced Yoshi into the fold, in 2010. Fans have been hoping for a follow-up ever since.
