Spike Lee is set to direct Frederick Douglass Now, the third time he’s directed a film take on a one-man stage show by Roger Guenveur Smith who has played roles in ten of Lee’s movies over the past three decades.

Douglass was one of the most extraordinary figures in U.S. history: a self-liberated slave, orator, publisher, and pioneering feminist who pleaded the case for abolition before Abraham Lincoln.

The film adaptation will be accompanied by jazz artist Branford Marsalis and composer Marc Anthony Thompson. The project once again will be produced by Buffalo 8 and follows A Huey P. Newton Story and Rodney King, the latter of which Netflix acquired last year.
