Sony to Shut Off Servers for 3 PS3 Games

Sony has rather cryptically revealed on Twitter that the online servers for SOCOM Confrontation, SOCOM 4, and MAG will be shut down early in 2014.

All three of these games – PS3-exclusive titles launched from 2008 to 2011 – met with various levels of popularity, but none performed nearly as well as the SOCOM games on PlayStation 2. SOCOM 4 in particular suffered from the PlayStation Network outage that happened right when the game launched, and the studio behind two of the games, Sony-owned Zipper Interactive, was closed over a year ago.

While the shutdowns – which will happen on January 28, 2014 – should only affect a small group of PlayStation 3 owners, it’s pretty certain that the hard core fans these kinds of games create will be sad to see the servers go. Shutdowns of this kind also tend to try in some extra curiosity seekers, so if you haven’t given these games a look, be sure and give them a go before the year ends.
